One of UNESCO's missions is
“contribute to the building of peace, eradication of poverty, sustainable
development and intercultural dialogue, and education is one of its main
activities to achieve this goal.” And to do that, many things or systems have been
tried. But there is one of those systems that seems to be a good way to reach
this goal faster and this system continues to prove its strength; I am talking
about the virtual university, I mean all things that have the possibility to
improve education over the world or all forms of culture of sharing information
that can reach this goal.
First, it’s important to mention
that: this system would not have been existing without information and
communication technology (ICT). With development of internet many points have
become possibility like:
Building a culture of learning,
UNESCO wants to promote an education for all. In this case, knowledge needs to
be shared everywhere, so that everyone can have access and benefit all a good
basic education.
Building a culture of sharing,
when everybody understood the idea that hides behind the fact of sharing, they
will build by themselves in an open education resources because all the
information that someone will need, will already be put on the internet. For
example, since 2001, more than 60 institutions around the world have made more
than 2,000 courses available and these numbers are increasing day by day
Building a culture of peace: when
a culture of learning will enable a culture of sharing. A culture of peace will
be possible. Because this culture can take a leadership role in supporting international
communities of interest fits exactly with the main function of UNESCO.
However, it’s important to
mention that this model of education has first and foremost been designed to
address the need to expand access to secondary education and skills development
in a context of insufficient physical infrastructure and trained human
resources; but it is nowadays becoming an imperative.
